A man who burnt his partner with a cigarette, tried to poison and then strangled her with an HDMI cord has been jailed for the heinous attacks.
Brendon Byrnes-Cooper, 27, from Loganlea pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on November 24 to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and two counts of strangulation (domestic violence offences).
The court heard that on December 1 and 2, 2019, Byrnes-Cooper was high on methamphetamine and was having an argument with his partner at the time.
He refused to let her leave the house they were in and he then strangled her with an HDMI cord, causing her to gasp for breath for 30 seconds.
Byrnes-Cooper then attempted to poison the victim by offering her a drink containing nail polish remover while threatening to kill her.
He also grabbed her by the mouth and nose which caused her to lose breath for one minute and twenty seconds and lose consciousness.
As she tried to escape, Byrnes-Cooper dragged her back to the garage and put a cigarette out on her.
The court heard when Byrnes-Cooper was arrested, he made false admissions to police.
Judge David Kent said this kind of offending needed to be punished by the courts.
“You’re still relatively young but this is very serious criminal conduct,” he said.
“Your consumption of methamphetamine is an explanation but not an excuse for your actions.”
He was sentenced to three years in prison and will be eligible for parole on August 24, 2023.
