Brendan Wayne Clayton, 26, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday to five charges including two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and one count each of evasion and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The court heard police caught Clayton doing a burnout and attempted to intercept his silver Holden, which had the number plate removed, but it failed to stop on May 1 last year.

The Polair police helicopter began tracking him and they observed Clayton driving dangerously.

He ran a number of red lights and crossed onto the wrong side of the road in front of oncoming vehicles on Grand Plaza Drive, Browns Plains.

Polair then tracked him driving to the Boronia Heights shopping centre.

He stopped his car in the middle of the road and stole a Jeep Grand Cherokee and drove off.

The court heard the car was subject to a tyre deflation device but Clayton increased speed and crossed onto the wrong side of the road and almost collided with oncoming vehicles.

He then collided with a traffic island and crossed onto the wrong side of the road again and ran a red light before he lost control and finally came to a stop.

The court heard Clayton was arrested and taken to hospital where tests defended the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamines in his system.

Clayton’s lawyer told the court his client had long struggled with meth addiction and had been clean before relapsing last May.

He said on the day of the offence, Clayton had an unplanned encounter with an old associate which led to him taking drugs.

He said Clayton will be seeking professional help to deal with his drug issues once he gets released from custody.

The court heard Clayton’s mother described him as a “kind, thoughtful, caring person” who changed when he used drugs in a letter rendered in court.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment with an immediate parole release date.

The 334 days he spent in pre-sentence custody declared time served under the sentence.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years.
