A Logan landscaper has faced court after a road rage meltdown in which he smashed a truckie’s head with a metal pole.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday, June 8 that Benjamin John Madden, 33, was driving in Slacks Creek at 10.30 am on February 20 when the attack happened.

The Bahrs Scrub father-of-one was involved in a car crash with another person and then began a conversation with the victim.

The 29-year-old truck driver was allegedly swearing and abusing Madden.

The court heard Madden then approached the victim and hit the driver’s right side door with his arm.

He then grabbed a metal pole from the back of his car and smashed the victim twice in the legs and once in the head.

The attack caused cuts to the head and bleeding.

Madden pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm, while armed and also wilful damage.

The court heard Madden handed himself in to police two days later, which defence lawyer Tayler Bowdren said demonstrated his genuine remorse.

“My client’s remorse is reflected in his early plea of guilty,” Ms Bowdren said.

“He handed himself in and has taken steps to improve himself.”

The court heard Madden worked for his dad’s landscaping company and was a father-of-one, with another child on the way.

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy said his behaviour was unacceptable.

“Your reaction was inexplicable and you are lucky you did not cause a much more serious injury,” she said.

“You made the unwise decision to get out of your car.

“I accept your expression of remorse and I can see this conduct was out of character.

“Your character references express disbelief that you did this.”

Madden was sentenced to 12 months’ prison, wholly suspended for 12 months.
