An international polo player and horse trainer’s spiral into drug abuse has led to him assaulting a man with a metal bat and bashing his head in, leaving him hospitalised.

Beaudesert resident Edward John Crosbie Goold, 46, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Wednesday, October 19, to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, possession of a weapon category M and breaching bail conditions.

The court heard Goold approached his neighbour on December 14 las year in Tabooba armed with a metal baseball bat.

“He approached his neighbour, swore at the complainant and struck him, causing bleeding,” the police prosecutor said.

“There was a large amount of localised bleeding pouring from his head.”

Goold’s lawyer said his client regretted his actions.

“The defendant is very remorseful,” his lawyer said.

“He says he takes full accountability for his actions.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Goold’s behaviour was extreme.

“You could have easily killed him or given him brain damage,” Mr Chowdhury said.

He said Goold was doing well in life before he spiralled into drug abuse.

“Before this you were an international polo player that represented Australia,” he said.

“In some ways it’s a tragedy to see you there (in the dock).

“Before your life unravelled you were doing very well in life.”

Goold was convicted and received a head sentence of three-and-a-half years.
