A 24-year-old Shailer Park man will be spending Christmas behind bars after he used his car to ram into the entrance of the Logan City Tavern while people were inside and crash-tackled a female security guard.

Hayden Andrew Evans, 24, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to 13 charges including assault occasioning bodily harm in a public place while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.

The court heard Evans attacked a female security guard working at the bottle shop at Logan City Tavern on September 4, 2021.

The 24-year-old ran up to the female guard swearing before he crash tackled her to the ground, forcing her face to make impact with a metal sign on the way down.

Evans returned to his car and used it to smash through the glass entrance doors of the Logan City Tavern while witnesses watched on from inside.

He then put the car into reverse and rammed the entrance doors a second time before leaving the scene.

Police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher said the incident was an “appalling act of violence” that was seemingly unprovoked and caused over $11,000 in property damage.

“You can only imagine the fear of people inside as they see a car driving towards the premises where they’re currently participating in leisurely activity,” she said.

The court heard Evans went on to drive the vehicle erratically through Logan Central before it uncontrollably veered and crashed into a mailbox at a unit complex along Mayes Ave.

He was confronted by two police officers at the scene and Evans aggressively threatened that he would “f*** them both up” before escaping over a fence.

Evans’ lawyer told the court her client previously struggled with drug addiction and “had a bad mindset at the time.”

“My instructions are that being in prison has changed his life,” she said.

“He’s instructed that he’s regretful and remorseful for those actions.”

The court heard Evans was also charged with producing cannabis after police located six cannabis plants at a residence in Shailer Park on April 21, 2021.

Magistrate Cameron McKenzie said he took into account that Evans had spent 122 days in custody.

“That’s very serious offending,” he said.

“How other innocent members of the public, besides from the security guard, were not injured or indeed killed is remarkable.”

He was sentenced to a 15-month head sentence of imprisonment with a release date on January 28, 2022. He was also ordered to pay $1500 in compensation to the security guard.
