KGSC won the open male, open female, year 10 male and year 10 female categories.

But the effort par excellence belonged to a last minute substitute “who had no business winning her match”.

KGSC tennis excellence co-ordinator Trent Steele said year 7 student Ava Taylor epitomised what it meant to do your best under trying circumstances with a stellar 16-14 win in the year 10 category.

Steele said the key to the school’s magic lay in their team spirit which lifted everyone’s game against formidable rivals.

“All our kids work together as a team and gee their sportsmanship was good and the results just followed,” Steele said.

“The way they work together, even though tennis is a solitary sport, sets them apart – you never hear Ashleigh Barty talking about herself; it is always about the team.

“They do work hard and we have a really good format and structure that encompasses more than just hitting.

“The group of about 50 players acts as a family that pushes one another to make everyone stronger.

“And they get the opportunity to play with good hitters every day so you can’t help but grow.”

RESULTS:

In the open male division the boys won 64-59 in a “a really tight tussle” which included the efforts of Marvin Lee (year 11), Charlie Such (year 12), Ethan Takac (year 11), Brooklin Burley (year 12) and Ian Rahim (year 12).

In the open female the girls had “a beauty of a win” with a decisive 35-6 score.

The side included Martine Carroll (year 10), Sienna Jensen (year 10), Lara Smith (year 10) and Ella Pittendreigh (year 8).

Steele said the year 10 males’ competition was quite a tight affair until the doubles and saw the score settled at 69-42 by Hugh Pfitzner (year 10), Andrew Horridge (year 10), Max Townson (year 10), Marchainan Anderson (year 10), Sam Hiley (year 9) and Jaiden Pham (year 9).

And in the year 10 females Lily Taylor (year 8), Emilia Schmidt (year 10), Rotidzo Mabukwa (year 9), Ava Taylor (year 7) and Aleisha Horridge (year 7) left little to chance with a 72-36 victory.

KGSC next vie for Queensland State Championships glory on September 16-18 at Rockhampton Tennis Club where the open girls return as defending champions and national champions.
