Jack Laredo: Young Loganlea man jailed for perverting justice

A young Logan man has been handed his first taste of jail after inexplicably signing a statutory declaration claiming ownership of a sawn-off shotgun at the behest of his drug trafficker friend.

A 21-year-old Logan man will serve four months of a 15-month jail sentence after signing a false statutory declaration claiming ownership of a sawn-off shotgun at the behest of his drug-trafficking mate.

Loganlea man Jack Marshall Laredo pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to the single count of perverting the course of justice, which occurred between May 16 – July 17 last year.

The court heard the offending was initiated when an associate of Laredo’s co-offender was arrested and returned to custody on an RTP (return to prison) warrant for offences which included possessing a Category H weapon, the shotgun.

Laredo’s co-offender, a convicted drug trafficker who received 15 months’ jail for his part in the conspiracy, asked Laredo to sign a statutory declaration claiming ownership of the shotgun.

This was provided to the associate’s lawyers, but suspicious police contacted Laredo who could “provide very little detail about the gun or where it was located”.

Laredo was arrested on July 25. He was subject to two probation orders at the time and had “poor” compliance, the court heard.

Laredo had only minor dishonesty-type and drug offences on his criminal history prior to this offending.

Judge Ian Dearden was scathing of the cack-handed attempt by Laredo to be the cat’s paw.

“It’s an extraordinarily stupid decision,” he said.

“As far as I can see, there was no upside for you.

“It’s just nuts.

“You were the fall guy.”

Laredo was sentenced to 15 months’ jail with a parole release date of November 24, having already served 83 days behind bars.
