30. Brendan Hodgkins

Aussie rules football on the bayside has seen a revival since Brendan Hodgkins has taken over as president of the Wynnum Vikings almost four years ago.

The man, who was previously in charge of the club’s juniors, has grown the club’s membership base, implemented junior programs to attract youngsters from the area to participate in the sport and get more children off the couch and onto the Aussie rules field.

He has also been successful in growing the club as far as upgrading facilities, including receiving a $580,000 grant from the federal government in May to help improve facilities and make the club more female friendly going forward.

After several years of being a club in uncertainty, Hodgkins has reinvigorated the Vikings and given the bayside a true presence in AFL Queensland.

Another man who has been responsible for growing a sports club on the bayside is Bayside United soccer president Greg Pascall.

Rewind almost seven years and Bayside was a club known for its senior divisions and having teams contending for trophies in those competitions but now the club has grown its junior base significantly under Pascall and improved facilities at their Lota base to the point where baysiders now have a first-class club to get involved and soccer as well as getting active.

Further to that, Bayside has been a club that has prioritised their female program from juniors to seniors and United’s future is looking even brighter after also securing a $580,000 grant from the federal government to improve their facilities to suit their female players.

As president of the Wynnum Manly Seagulls Junior Rugby League Club, Adam Lipke is in charge of an organisation that sits in one of the best breeding grounds for rugby league talent in Queensland. But not only that, the Wynnum Manly Rugby League juniors have a big impact off the field as well hosting many community events each year, doing work for charity and making sure they play a big role in the lives of baysiders.

Lipke has continued this tradition and has grown it even further, making several improvements to the club’s Stradbroke Rd base over the past six years to ensure bayside rugby league juniors continue to have one of the best avenues to start their rugby league dream but to also continue the club’s tradition of being a main stay in the bayside community.

The bayside is known for being a tight-knit community and lending a helping hand wherever needed and the churches in the area are significant contributors to that, especially the St Peter’s Anglican Church.

As well as helping residents in general, the church hosts several events each year to fundraise for different causes, hosts community events such as markets and the leader behind that is Reverend Donna Peterson.

Reverend Peterson has been lending a hand to baysiders for years and continues to make a positive influence on the community.

26. Joan Pease

Joan has always been an enthusiastic member of the bayside community but her role grew when she was elected State Member for Lytton in 2015.

After being in office for more than four years, Ms Pease has continued to make improvements to the area and build the community even further, especially through her work with community groups and helping those groups have the resources to be able to help residents in the area.

An example of this work is her recent assistance in establishing the first ever domestic violence vigil on the bayside alongside the Bayside Domestic and Family Violence Community Collective and the Scope Club of Wynnum.

Ms Pease has also joined other local politicians in standing up for development proposals and applications, which residents felt would damage the character of the area.
