A forklift driver from Brisbane’s southwestern suburbs drank the “majority” of a carton of Heineken after knocking off work, before he was discovered by police the following morning asleep at the wheel at a Logan 7-Eleven.

A Brisbane forklift driver recorded a reading of 0.154 per cent BAC at 7.45am in the morning, when police discovered him slumped over the wheel at a Logan petrol bowser, a court has heard.

Ellen Grove man Peni Hevaha Ngatuvai, 41, who Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday heard worked for milk processing giant Lactalis, pleaded guilty to one count of being in charge of a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor.

The court heard police were dispatched to the 7-Eleven service station on Wembley Rd at Logan Central about 7.45am on July 26 to reports a man had fallen asleep at the wheel.

They discovered Ngatuvai “slumped unresponsive” behind the wheel of his car parked at a bowser and saw cans of Jack Daniels pre-mix in the driver’s side door.

The keys were also in the ignition.

Ngatuvai had “bloodshot eyes”, he was “disoriented”, had “slow speech” and struggled to remember where he had come from or where he was going, the court heard.

He told police he had drunk the “majority” of a carton of Heineken with a co-worker after finishing work at 11pm the night prior and had gone for a drive to “clear his mind” following the receipt of “devastating news” about his ex-partner.

Ngatuvai was fined $1250 and lost his licence for eight months.
