Man sentenced after throwing glove dripping with blood at police

A young Logan man has been sentenced after he threw a glove dripping with his own blood at a hapless police officer trying to help him.

How do juries decide a verdict?

A young Logan man has been ordered to perform 80 hours’ community service and warned he is on the verge of having a conviction recorded against his name after pleading guilty to throwing a glove covered in his blood at a police officer while intoxicated.

Bahrs Scrub trolley boy Calvin Robert Lister, 23, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to the single count of assaulting a police officer in a public place while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.

The court heard the disgusting assault occurred just after 10pm on August 22 this year when concerned members of the public reported a man lying motionless on the side of Menora Rd.

Police arrived and discovered a “heavily intoxicated” Lister lying on a bed of rocks he had fallen onto, lacerating his mouth, according to witnesses.

The officers organised paramedics to attend, but Lister flew into a rage, verbally abusing officers.

He was nearly run over by oncoming traffic when he tried to walk away, so the officers attempted to sit him back down.

One of them dropped a disposable glove they were putting on to handle Lister, so Lister, who was covered in blood by this stage, picked it up, smearing it in the process, and threw it at the officer.

Police charged Lister the following day, the court heard, but he showed “no remorse”, claiming he threw the glove at the officer because they had littered.

Magistrate Louise Shephard said the police officers were trying to help Lister.

“The public called the police because they were concerned for your safety,” she said.

The court heard this was the fourth time Lister had been before a court and each time he had escaped having a conviction recorded.

Ms Shephard considered recording the conviction but ultimately decided against it, giving him a “last chance” to keep his record clean due to his young age.
