A young Logan man with no criminal history was dealing cannabis on a massive scale, a court has heard, after he pleaded guilty to 18 drug supply charges, with up to one pound of the drug being moved per transaction.

Waterford West man Daniel Trevor Whatley, 26, pleaded guilty to all 18 charges in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday.

Whatley, who the court heard is a former Park Ridge State High School student who works full-time at an Acacia Ridge turfing business, was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and ordered to perform 80 hours’ community service for what Magistrate Brian Kilmartin called “peddling misery”.

The court heard the drug supplies occurred mostly between May – August this year.

On August 3 and August 8, Whatley sold one pound of cannabis for $3400 and $3300 respectively.

“They’re tidy sums of money out of other people’s misery,” Mr Kilmartin said.

The court heard Whatley was busted when police conducted a search warrant on his property.

They discovered about 20g of cannabis and was given a chance to complete the drug diversion program, but a subsequent analysis of his mobile phone revealed he was a drug dealer and he was charged.

Defence lawyer Nicholas Crawford told the court his client had been smoking the drug for a “number” of years but has since given up its use.

Mr Crawford stressed there were no “tick-lists, piles of money or (drug) paraphernalia” discovered when the raid was conducted.

Despite taking a dim view of the offending, labelling it “callous, selfish and indifferent”, Mr Kilmartin did not record convictions against Whatley.
