“More than just a hoon”: A 20yo Logan man is in a world of hurt, back in court just weeks after a hefty Supreme Court sentence.

A young Logan man who is a “menace on the roads” and “more than just a hoon” has been jailed for evading police, just weeks after he was sentenced in the Supreme Court for drug trafficking.

Waterford West man Zane Garry Cannan, 20, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to 12 offences, 10 of them related to his dangerous and illegal conduct on Logan roads, especially around the Browns Plains area.

The court heard the most serious of these was on July 16 last year, when police witnessed him about 11am “accelerate into a roundabout’ on Grand Plaza Dr at Browns Plains, creating smoke, a screeching noise, and causing other cars to stop to avoid a collision.

Police activated their sirens and saw Cannan “look in his mirror” before speeding away, with “no intention of stopping”.

All up, Cannan was charged with three counts of making unnecessary noise or smoke, a breach of bail condition, two counts of driving while demerit point suspended, evading police, driving without due care and attention, breaching a condition made on release of a motor vehicle, contravening a direction of police, failure to give way at a T-intersection and failing to comply with a requirement to produce a motor vehicle.

Police prosecutor Snr Const Michael Read told the court Cannan was a “serious menace on the roads” and “more than just a hoon”.

He also revealed he’d witnessed Cannan’s dangerous driving first-hand from the front seat of a police vehicle.

It’s not just behind the wheel Cannan is a menace, though.

The court heard the defendant was sentenced in the Supreme Court on October 29 this year to four-and-a-half years’ jail for offences including drug trafficking.

He was ordered to serve nine months of the sentence before its suspension in mid-2021.

The court heard he will miss the birth of his first child, who is due early next year.

For the current hooning charges, Cannan was sentenced to 50 days’ jail to be served concurrent to the Supreme Court sentence, and was also disqualified from driving for two years.

Convictions were recorded.
