A 29-year-old Logan man has been refused bail after he was charged with unlawfully entering the home of his 16-year-old ex-partner, who has an intellectual disability, and assaulting her.

Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A 29-year-old Logan painter allegedly let himself into the Sunshine Coast home of his 16-year-old ex-partner, who has an intellectual disability, while she was home alone and assaulted her, including “slamming her into the ground” by her bra strap, a court has heard.

The Bethania man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Beenleigh Magistrates Court today charged with five offences, including burglary and commit indictable offence, common assault, wilful damage, and two breaches of a domestic violence order.

The court heard the burglary, assault and wilful damage occurred on April 1 this year.

Police allege the teen girl was lying on a couch towards the front of the property when the man let himself in through the back door, which was unlocked.

They then claim he lunged over the back of the couch, so as to be facing his alleged victim, before wrenching her mobile phone from her hands, taking out its batteries and throwing it aside.

He allegedly pushed the young girl in the chest when she tried to stand, before swinging a satchel bag he was carrying into her shins, causing pain and lacerations and requiring her to use crutches for several days afterwards.

Police claim the man then grabbed the teenager by the throat and pushed her against a wall while screaming she was a “slut, dog, c***”.

As she cowered, the man then allegedly grabbed her by the bra strap and “slammed her into the ground” before running away when he heard the sound of distant, unrelated sirens.

The man was issued a notice to appear before the Beenleigh court on August 5 but he failed to appear.

Police were dispatched to the Bethania home the man shares with his mother yesterday to recover him.

His mother answered the door and claimed her son was not home but when police searched his room they discovered the now 17-year-old alleged victim in the man’s bed and him hiding underneath.

The court heard the man has nine failures to appear on his criminal history, which is littered with domestic violence-type offences, including assaults and arsons.

The man was remanded in custody.

His charges will next be mentioned on September 17 in the Beenleigh court.
