Termites, pigeons, spiders: Queensland’s ‘worst house’ is the stuff of nightmares

The stairs have collapsed, the pigeons have moved in and the ‘state-of-the-art’ security system is the stuff of nightmares, but Redcliffe’s ‘worst house’ is getting plenty of attention from buyers.

And the agents engaged to sell the crumbling clanger don’t mince words when it comes to describing the property, which will go to auction on January 31.

“Here on the Redcliffe peninsula is where you will find some of Australia’s most beautiful homes but this isn’t one of them,” Ray White Woody Point agent Jacob Cantlin says at the start of the listing video, before cutting away to show the crumbling floor boards, horizontal Hills hoist, rusted gutters, peeling paint and danger tape.

But that isn’t even the worst of what is on offer at the 9 Sportsground St property, with co-agent Damien Misso explaining that internal inspections of the “worst house in Redcliffe” are not possible.

“There’s a few reasons why you can’t,” he said.

“The first reason is the only stairs to the property actually don’t work.”

In fact, they are gone.

“Number 2, currently the property is occupied by some resident pigeons and we haven’t given them sufficient notice to inspect the property,” Mr Misso adds.

“And number 3, if point 1 and point 2 don’t prevent you from getting in, the state-of-the-art security system certainly will.”

“If you are able to salvage the home, you will be our new renovation hero because we don’t believe there is much house left as the termites have been busy,” the very honest listing says, adding that the resident pigeons could be “your new pets”.

But the unwanted tenants and the condition of the property has done little to deter diehard buyers, with its proximity to the beach, schools and the clubhouse of the NRL’s newest team, the Dolphins, proving to be strong drawcards.

Mr Misso said the property had already attracted plenty of interest and a few offers.

“It launched on New Year’s Eve and I had people wanting to make offers that same day,” he

said.

“It is a mix of buyers, from locals to interstate buyers … you could probably salvage the house if you have the right skills set.”

Mr Misso said the house was “very original”, and had been bought brand new by its current owner and his mother.

He said the owner moved out after the staircase collapsed beneath him.

Mr Misso, who has seen inside the house, said the new owner would also take possession of any furniture left inside the property.

“It is very original and very lived in,” he said.
