A Queensland couple has been awarded Airbnb hosts of the year for their rural retreat, as cost of living pressures boost the popularity of short-term stays off the beaten track.
Veronica and Colin Eastmure from the town of Conondale won the gong for ‘Down at the Dale’ at the short-term stay platform’s third annual Host Awards, celebrating top hosts and their listings across the country.

The Eastmures use thoughtful gestures like personalised bathrobes, wine and charcuterie platters, and rose petals on the beds to make the farm stay extra special for their guests.
“Our guests love the extra little touches they are greeted with upon arrival, and the outdoor bath and fire pit are regularly called out in reviews,” Mrs Eastmure said.
“Guests can expect a romantic getaway with privacy and views to soothe the soul. We are
passionate about promoting love and togetherness, and we want to make people smile.”
Queensland finalists also included ‘Oakhurst’ in the rural town of Biarra, and ‘Eh Frame’ in Sunshine Beach for Most Unique Stay, as well as ‘Storybook Cottage’ in Kenilworth for Best New Host, and ‘Boolarong’ on Stradbroke Island for Best Design Stay.
Airbnb country manager for Australia and New Zealand Susan Wheeldon said cost of living pressures had created “fundamental shifts” in the way people were travelling and living, creating opportunities “off the beaten track”.
“Domestic and affordable trends are seeing the benefits of tourism spreading further afield into regional Australia, and empowering locals to earn a living and make ends meet,” Ms Wheeldon said.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see travellers still enthusiastic about exploring new destinations and hosts act as passionate advocates for the regions and communities they live in.”
A recent report by Oxford Economics shows Airbnb guests travelling to Queensland spent more than $2.8 billion in 2022 and supported nearly 23,000 jobs in the state.
“This contribution to both the economy and jobs driven by travel on Airbnb in Queensland has created powerful economic ripple effects that support businesses such as retailers, restaurants, bars and cafes — which are often the foundation for life in local communities — and has generated jobs that go far beyond where travellers stayed and with whom.”
Winning Hosts were selected based on extensive Airbnb data, guest scores and reviews, with
oversight from a panel of judges.
