A heritage-listed 19th-century Brisbane home has undergone an extensive transformation by a Melbourne developer expanding its footprint in Queensland.
Boutique Australian property developer Kokoda Property embarked on a renovation project to completely overhaul the interior of the New Farm Refinery House with the developer acquiring the heritage-listed home for $4.9m in 2017.
The Refinery House, once used as the Colonial Sugar Refining Company office headquarters, pays homage to Brisbane’s industrial and population growth during the late 1800s, with the manor drawing on the past, present and future of New Farm.
The CSR initially purchased the land in 1892 for its proximity to the Brisbane CBD, surrounding markets and the riverfront, a central access point for large shipping vessels.
The home features exposed brick, burnished black stainless steel, and recycled timber floorboards while retaining timber beams, exterior awnings and a fireplace.
Kokoda Property founder and managing director Mark Stevens said the iconic building would be used as a Brisbane base for the developer’s interstate teams when they came to the city.
“Our interstate teams required a Brisbane base, and this exceptional property went to market at the perfect time, immediately capturing our attention as it embodied everything that Kokoda stands for,” Mr Stevens said.
“The purchase of Refinery House is an opportunity to own an incredible piece of Brisbane history.”
Mr Stevens said Melbourne architect Carr and Cottee Parker Architects collaborated to develop a modern design that stayed true to the Refinery’s heritage.
The manor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, lounge area, laundry, powder room and bar on the ground floor, while the second floor consists of the master bedroom with an ensuite and dressing room and three other bedrooms with their own bathrooms.
