Tributes flow for man allegedly stabbed to death in Heidelberg West

The brother of a man who moved to Melbourne to chase his dreams still doesn’t know why he was allegedly stabbed to death in Heidelberg West.

The heartbroken sibling of an aspiring architectural engineer says he is still in the dark about why his brother was allegedly murdered in Melbourne’s northeast.

Khalid Mahat, 25, died after he was allegedly stabbed to death at a North Crescent home in Heidelberg West on October 16.

Police allege 10 teens arrived at the property in two vehicles shortly after 3.30pm and attacked the Thomastown man before fleeing the scene in one car.

It’s understood the victim of a separate incident — an alleged kidnapping — was found inside the second vehicle.

Paramedics tried to revive Khalid but he died at the scene.

Xiis Abdi Mahat told the Herald Sun that he still doesn’t know why his brother died.

He said Khalid had aspirations to become an architectural engineer.

“Khalid was a kind-hearted person,” he said.

“He loved to take care of people, especially his family and friends.

“He always had a smile on his face.”

Mr Mahat said he and Khalid moved from Saudi Arabia to Australia in 2004.

“I have lots of memories with Khalid because we lived with each other,” he said.

“I’m still in shock about his death.”

Mohamed Ahmed said his friend was taken too soon.

“Khalid was a young 25-year-old man who was finally growing up to be an adult of independence,” he said.

“With a beautiful family of multiple siblings, he had such a big heart and played a massive character in the community, cared about others more than himself,” he said.

“Now his parents and younger siblings will have to watch their brother be buried at such a young age.”

Mr Ahmed created a GoFundMe page which has raised more than $4000 for Khalid’s family.

It comes as six teens were charged with murder and kidnapping and another three were charged with kidnapping.

They will face court next year.

Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange said the consequences of carrying knives as weapons was “life changing”.

“Victoria Police is relentless in pursuing anyone responsible for this level of violence and age will be no barrier to that,” he said.

“Carrying knives will result in tragic outcomes for all parties concerned and the ramifications are severe and life changing.

“A young man has senselessly lost his life, and a significant number of families now face a lifetime of grieving.”
