Witnesses reported seeing a Toyota SUV crashing through the school fence as its driver attempted to make a U-turn.

It was understood the driver was a mother of three with children at the school, and was a P-plater with a clean driving history who had been called to the school for a two-hour meeting before the crash.

Jack’s father Michael Davey remembered his son in the wake of the crash as a “shooting star”.

“Personally, he is our champion, our beloved son and brother who remains very much alive in our hearts and memories as we piece together our lives with his spirit going forward,” Mr Davey said.

“We find comfort in reading the many messages and memories of Jack and how his life and energy was a positive influence on so many in the community at just 11 years old.

“Our beautiful son. A shooting star who blessed us for 11 years with love, friendship and kindness.”

Deputy Premier Ben Carroll said his thoughts were with the Davey family and the Auburn South Primary School community “as they continue to grieve their loss in last year’s devastating accident”.

“This was a tragic incident that shook the community and we are making sure every person impacted at Auburn South Primary School and Auburn High School has the ongoing wellbeing support they need,” he said.

The driver will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 15.
