The identity of the driver charged over the crash death of a 23-year-old Bushland Beach man has been revealed.

Police allege on February 6 this year, David Ernest Arthur Johnson, 25, was behind the wheel of a white Volkswagen Golf, travelling outbound along the Ring Road.

In the passenger seat was 23-year-old Bushland Beach man, Nathaniel Frampton.

At 12.40am, the car left the road, crashed through a metal wire fence before stopping in a steep gully near Angus Smith Drive in Douglas.

Mr Frampton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson, a Nome resident, was taken to Townsville hospital in a serious condition.

He was later charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm while excessively speeding, and a count of disobeying the speed limit – type two vehicle related offence.

Johnson was not required to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court for the latest mention of his matter on Monday.

His lawyer, Mathai Joshi told Magistrate Steven Mosch that a brief of evidence was not yet completed, and asked to adjourn the matter for time to review the outstanding brief.

“I’ve been advised by my friend that the brief is estimated to be available by the end of September,” Mr Joshi said.

It was heard that “various witness statements” including police and doctor’s statements would be included.

Mr Joshi said once the brief had been reviewed, he would take committal instructions.

The matter was adjourned to a date in October, with Johnson’s appearance excused and bail enlarged.
