History has been made at Townsville Shopping Centre, with local teenager Destiny Lui selected as Sportsgirl’s first Indigenous school-based trainee.
The local student was selected for the First Nations School-Based Traineeship, an Australian-first for the brand.
The traineeship aims at creating pathways and opportunities to contribute towards an inclusive future for young Indigenous people.
16-year-old Destiny Lui said the traineeship will help her learn the ins and outs of running a business.
“I want to start a business after I finish school, so I really wanted it for the experience,” Destiny said.
“I was really happy when I found out I was selected because it was something I really wanted to do.”
Sportsgirl Store Manager Stephanie Robertson said Destiny was the clear choice for the traineeship.
“She has taken on this traineeship with such enthusiasm and commitment, highlighting the potential of programs like these to create meaningful career opportunities for young Indigenous people,” Ms Robertson said.
It comes as Townsville Shopping Centre unveiled a cultural mural and plaque in the Food Court as a way of celebrating North Queensland’s First Nations peoples and cultures.
Centre Manager Kelly Taylor-Smith said the traineeship is another step in the Centre’s reconciliation journey.
“This initiative perfectly aligns with Townsville Shopping Centre’s commitment to celebrating and supporting First Nations communities,” Ms Taylor-Smith said.
“We are thrilled that the Sportsgirl store in our centre was chosen to pilot this program and we congratulate Destiny.”
