The family behind a flourishing Burdell newsagency, have launched an exciting expansion with a new store that leverages the power of coffee aromas to attract customers.

Over three years ago, husband and wife team Ayush and Prerna Thukral founded Northshore Newsagency and Gifts at Shop 10, 16-38 Main St, Burdell.

Due the strong support they received from the community for their newsagency which also sold gift items, the couple were emboldened to expand their footprint with a second Townsville store.

The Thukrals secured a prime position in Thuringowa Village Shopping Centre – previously occupied by a butcher shop next to Coles – which officially opened as News Extra Kirwan at Shop 3, 320 Thuringowa Drive on November 23.

In addition to their standard newsagency offering of scratchies, lotto, newspapers and stationery, Mrs Thukral said they sold gift items, which were proving to be popular with Christmas shoppers, especially the mugs, glasses and gift packs of scratchies.

The store was trying something new with its takeaway drink section, where locally roasted beans featured in their freshly made coffees, along with several other beverage options.

“We thought (the new location) would have good exposure … and since we opened, customers said ‘it’s good you have opened, we badly needed a newsagency over there’. The response has been good from the customers,” Mrs Thukral said.

“We added coffee, because obviously people need coffee in the morning.

“They’re saying it’s nice coffee, so we are getting regular customers that are coming again and again.”

In addition to the coffee fans, the store has benefited from a heavy customer traffic “crazy about lotteries”, looking to secure a slice of some big jackpots.

Planning was underway for the store to become an Australian Post point, where customers could stock up on stamps and other items, and their product range was also set to broaden with additional gift ideas and printer ink.

Provided that the community got behind their business, Mrs Thukral hoped their expansion would continue into another Townsville location.

She was grateful for the assistance from Colliers leasing executive Reagan Stokely who helped them secure a seven year lease in the centre.

“This tenancy is a great location directly adjacent to Coles Supermarket servicing large amounts of foot traffic frequenting the centre,” Mr Stokely said.

“News Extra fits perfectly into the tenant mix that is already within the centre.”
