Toowoomba’s RACQ LifeFlight crew called to flood zone to rescue injured motorist

Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight chopper was used to evacuate a stranded and injured motorist caught in the torrential rain near Gympie.

The Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew was called upon to retrieve an injured and stranded motorist caught up in the torrential downpour near Gympie on Saturday.

The man, in his 50s, had sustained injuries when he drove into flood waters in the Gympie area in the early hours of Saturday.

Other rescue crews’ efforts had been thwarted by terrible weather conditions throughout the morning until the Toowoomba-based helicopter crew managed to reach him.

The injured man told rescuers he drove into the water about 1am Saturday.

“He managed to get himself out of his vehicle and walked for approximately a kilometre until he was able to find a house and call for help,” an RACQ LifeFlight spokesman said.

The injured man was airlifted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital suffering back injuries.

Meanwhile, a female in her teens was transported to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition with abrasions to her arms following a vehicle and pedestrian incident on North St, Rockville, about 12.44am Sunday.
