Mining activity west of Toowoomba has seen a $6m boost to its operations after welcoming a vital piece of machinery sourced from the Garden City.
The Caterpillar 993 loader marks the New Acland Coal’s largest capital expenditure in more than a year, purchasing the more than 130 tonne machine through Hastings Deering Toowoomba.
New Acland Coal general manager Dave O’Dwyer said the coal mine has spent $113.4m in the past two years between more than 500 different local suppliers, including Hastings Deering.
“The deliberate decision to invest in and purchase goods and services supports supplier development, provides opportunities for local employment, and stimulates business growth,” he said.
The Caterpillar 993 weighs in at a massive 135 tonnes, with a length of 16.5m and a bucket capacity of 17.5 cubic metres, equivalent to the size of a car.
Hasting’s Deering’s Nic Hope said the Toowoomba team worked closely with New Acland Coal to design the machine for its operation.
“We then source the Caterpillar 993 loader, modified the machine at our Toowoomba business centre and then delivered it the mine site for final assembly and commissioning,” he said.
“Our team at Toowoomba will also support New Acland Coal and the loader through its complete life cycle.
“It’s brilliant big local businesses like New Acland Coal choose to support Darling Downs companies, like Hastings Deering Toowoomba. Together, we’re creating jobs and building a stronger Toowoomba.”
The new heavy machinery isn’t the coal mines only recent achievement, having celebrated its 300th full time employee star on site in May.
It comes as another win for the coal mine whose local objector the Oakey Coal Action Alliance withdrew its Land Court of Queensland appeal earlier in the year.
