Prisoner escapes on Range

A Toowoomba man who gained notoriety after breaking free from a prison van at the top of the range and leading police on a foot chase has been returned to custody.

Jason Lee Colless, 32, had fled a car pulled over by police on November 3 and again led officers on a footchase.

However, this time his capture was a more painful event when a police dog bit him when he refused to come out from behind bushes, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

His solicitor Claire Graham, of Skuse Graham Lawyers, sought bail on her client’s behalf which was objected to by police, Sergeant Natalie Bugden telling the court Colless was an unacceptable risk of reoffending while on bail.

Sgt Bugden said Colless had been jailed for 12 months for escaping lawful custody after he kicked his way out of a police van while being transported to prison on March 27, 2019, which showed he was a risk of not complying with bail.

When arrested on November 3, he had been found with keys to a Toyota reported stolen in Warwick, she said.

He had also admitted to being the driver of a vehicle captured on CCTV entering a James St service station on October 26 for which he was charged with disqualified driving and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, later telling police he hadn’t realised the car was stolen but couldn’t say who gave him the car, she said.

Colless, who appeared by video link from the watch house, was not required to enter any pleas to 12 charges.

Ms Graham submitted if granted bail her client would live with his mother in Kingsthorpe, report daily to Oakey police station and wear a GPS tracking device.

Colless had been released from jail in September and had since been seeing a doctor and for the first time had been placed on the suboxone program to address his long standing drug addiction which dated back to his early 20s, she said.

He would also require further treatment for the dog bite wound, Ms Graham submitted.

Acting Magistrate Roger Stark noted Colless had 13 pages of criminal history including convictions for unlawfully using motor vehicles and refused bail, remanding him in custody for mention in the same court on November 23.
