‘Good day for women to help women’: Tigers AFL Ladies’ Day supporting Protea Place

Dozens of women gathered for a day of footy, laughs, and bubbles for the Toowoomba Tigers Ladies’ Day, but the event has raised money for a not-so-cheery cause remembering the loss of a Toowoomba mum earlier this year.

Dozens of women gathered for a day of footy, laughs, and bubbles for the Toowoomba Tigers Ladies’ Day, but the event has raised money for a not-so-cheery cause remembering the loss of a Toowoomba mum earlier this year.

Each year the Tiger’s Ladies’ Day donates to a different charity, and this year one of the girls on the team suggested Protea Place, a charity supporting women experiencing domestic violence.

In April this year, Louise Griffiths, a dedicated volunteer for Protea Place, was tragically found dead in an alleged act of domestic violence.

Women’s Tigers Captain Carlee Mesken said the event on Saturday celebrated women, and their cause did too.

“There’s been a bit of attention brought to them [Protea Place] this year after Louise passed away,” she said.

“A few people within our community had a relationship with her, so it was a nice way to honour her and support those ladies with their loss.

“It’s definitely a nice feeling knowing that the money is going to women who are in need and we can help them.

“A good day for women to help women.”

Ms Mesken said the event celebrated all the women in their lives.

“I think it’s a great day to celebrate women in sport but also in the community,” she said.

“People sometimes forget about all the mums who are doing the early runs to drop their kids off or helping club managers.

“It’s a really good day to bring attention to that and celebrate everybody.

“It’s so nice to celebrate women and bring attention to all the good that everyone does.”

The event was sponsored by Byron Capital, The Rock, Hogan’s Jewellers, Complete Body gym, Tony’s Butchers, and Minx.
