Emergency services treated three patients after horror early morning crash south of Toowoomba

A grandmother has lost her life after two vehicles collided on a country road in the early hours of Monday morning south of Toowoomba.

Police have confirmed a 53-year-old Greenmount woman has died after a two-vehicle crash on Drayton Connection Rd, south of Toowoomba.

It is understood the male driver of a utility was heading south from Toowoomba when he collided with a station wagon that was heading north, near the intersection with Simpson Rd shortly after 6am on Tuesday.

The collision sent the station wagon off the road and down an embankment.

Passing motorists rescued an infant that was in the car seat in the station wagon but there was nothing they could do to save the driver, a 53-year-old grandmother.

She died at the scene.

A 53-year-old Headington Hill man, the driver and sole occupant of the utility, was transported to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

Darling Downs County Patrol Inspector Danny Shaw said the baby capsule saved the infants’ life.

“Proper child restraints are pivotal and we appeal to everyone to make sure they have them on” he said.

“Please be fully focused on your driving.”

Inspector Shaw added that police were still investigating the crash, but given the time of day distraction and fatigue may have been a factor.

“With some of these incidents we find it hard to determine why the crash has occurred but if people stay fully focused on their driving it may reduce some instances of fatal or serious injury crashes,” he said.

The crash comes just two days after an Inverell man died when he was thrown from a vehicle at Beebo, near Texas.

It is likely the man would have survived if he was wearing his seatbelt.

“The driver was not wearing a seat belt but his two dogs were restrained inside the vehicle,” Inspector Shaw said.

“The dogs survived but he did not.”

Drayton Connection Road was closed for several hours.

The crash has blocked both north and southbound traffic and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the matter and anyone with dashcam footage is urged to come forward.
