The Toowoomba Clinic heads into voluntary administration

A private, specialist mental health clinic in Toowoomba - the only one of its kind servicing a 500km-wide region - has entered voluntary administration. DETAILS.

Almost four years on from its official opening a private mental health clinic in Toowoomba has entered voluntary administration.

The Toowoomba Clinic, a near-$9 million private, 27-bed adult mental health clinic which began taking patients in September 2020 is set for closure.

On May 3 a public notice was issued that the company had now entered an external voluntary administration.

As the only specialist mental health hospital in Toowoomba servicing a rural catchment area of 500km, the closure will place additional pressure on other mental health providers as psychiatrists attempt to ensure the ongoing care and treatment of their patients.

A Toowoomba Clinic employee who wishes to remain anonymous told the Chronicle staff had been suspicious it would close for several months.

“We did not expect it to happen this soon,” the employee said.

“There’s only three or four patients there now and they are leaving this weekend.”

In a joint statement issued by The Toowoomba Clinic and Brisbane-based voluntary administrators SV Partners, it was explained the insolvency firm would work to determine the clinic’s future.

SV Partners director Anne Meagher said the company advised the changes in psychiatrists’ work patterns caused by Covid-19 made it difficult to attract psychiatrists willing to admit patients.

“After 10 years of work by shareholders it was a difficult decision for the directors to make as they were committed to improving access to mental health services for people in our region,” Ms Meagher said.

Ms Meagher said the Toowoomba Clinic would cease trading on Sunday the 5th of May and she was planning to hold a meeting of creditors on 14 May 2024.
