The case of a man charged with murdering a Hobart midwife on Christmas Day in front of her two children may be resolved before reaching trial.

On Tuesday, Darren Mark Wake appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania via video link following the death of 52-year-old Rachel Wake on December 25, 2021.

Mr Wake, 61, pleaded not guilty to murder in October last year, with the case moving to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in preparation for trial.

His plea had come 10 months after Ms Wake’s death, following repeated adjournments in the magistrates court.

But on Tuesday, defence barrister Kim Baumeler told Justice Gregory Geason the matter could resolve.

Crown prosecutor Heather Denton asked for the case to return to court in November, to give her office time to prepare the facts of the case in the event it did resolve.

Ms Wake died at the Royal Hobart Hospital after an alleged stabbing incident at Mornington the same day in front of her two teenage children.

Her death shook the Hobart community, with an outpouring of emotions and tributes via social media from women she’d helped as a nurse and midwife.

Mr Wake was remanded in custody, to reappear in court on November 9.
