The man accused of murdering a Hobart woman on Christmas Day has appeared before a judge for the first time.

Darren Mark Wake is facing a charge of murder over the alleged killing of Tasmanian midwife Rachel Wake, 52, on Christmas Day in 2021.

Ms Wake died at the Royal Hobart Hospital after she was fatally stabbed at her home on Binalong Rd, Mornington on that day.

Wake pleaded not guilty to the charge about 10 months after the alleged murder.

He appeared for the first time in Hobart Supreme Court on Monday before Justice Gregory Geason.

Prosecution asked Wake’s lawyer to confirm whether the matter would go to trial, due to the time that had passed since the alleged act.

Lawyer Cameron Scott told the court that Wake’s matter would proceed to a trial.

Wake’s matter will be mentioned again in late March, allowing time for the file to be completed to a trial standard.

A trial date is yet to be set.

He was remanded in custody.
