A duo have been found guilty of terrifying robberies after Woolworths staff were threatened with a taser before thousands of dollars in cigarettes were stolen.

Breaking the ice: Meth use in SA

A taser-wielding man and his meth-addicted girlfriend stole thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes from Woolworths to sell on the black market, a court heard.

Christopher Mark Allford and getaway driver Nathan Troy Stehbens were found guilty of two counts of aggravated robbery after a judge-alone trial in the District Court.

In a published judgment online, Judge Simon Slattery said the first victim was working as a console operator at the Gilles Plains Woolworths on November 1, 2021.

A male and a female, who were alleged to be Allford and his girlfriend Amy Campbell, approached the service station.

Allford and Campbell, who were wearing motorcycle helmets and whose faces could not be identified, demanded two boxes of cigarettes, valued at $5905.

“The male entered the staff area, held out his hand and told (the victim) that he had a ‘taser’ in his hand and he would be taking the boxes,” Judge Slattery said.

They exited through an emergency fire door and an alarm was set off.

Allford and Campbell attended the Para Hills Woolworths two hours later and approached the second victim who was working in the express area.

Allford pulled out a taser from his pocket and pointed it at the victim.

“He appeared to activate the taser and she heard a crackling sound and saw it light up,” Judge Slattery said.

The duo stole a box of cigarettes valued at $3000, before meeting Stehbens a short distance from the entrance and handing the stolen goods over to him.

Police apprehended Stehbens about 50 minutes later and found crushed boxes from the robberies in the car.

Campbell pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and was sentenced in 2022 to three years and 10 months jail, with a non-parole period of two years.

During Campbell’s sentencing, the court heard the group stole cigarettes to sell on the black market and make money to buy drugs.

Judge Slattery said he was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the male involved in the robberies with Campbell was Allford and the getaway driver was Stehbens.

He noted evidence including Stehbens arrest, Allford’s DNA found in the getaway car and text messages between the duo about their plan to “do that thing”.

“Campbell, Allford and Stehbens were well known to one another and that had been the case for many months … During that time they had shared drugs and had transacted the sale of drugs with each other,” Judge Slattery said.
