A father-of-five has come clean on a drug bust after he was caught with large amounts of meth and fantasy in his backpack.

Colm Patrick Francis O’Hare, 47, pleaded guilty in the District Court on Tuesday to two counts of commercial drug trafficking, which was accepted in satisfaction by prosecution.

During O’Hare’s unsuccessful bail bid the court heard he was stopped by police on April 11, 2022 at Hackham after he appeared to make attempts to avoid them.

Police found 381g of methamphetamine, $20,000 in cash and 134g of GHB, also known as fantasy, in Mr O’Hare’s backpack on April 11 at Hackham.

Police then searched O’Hare’s Hackham house.

“In the house, they found more GHB in two bottles, which together weighed over 500g,” Brigid Symes, for the prosecution, said.

Police also found nine ice pipes, 25 tablets believed to contain pseudoephedrine, scales, 200g of dried marijuana and two tick lists.

Various weapons including a taser, a baton, a double-edged sword and ammunition were also found inside the house.

Ms Symes said O’Hare was an “unacceptable risk” of reoffending as he had two prior convictions for drug trafficking.

O’Hare was sentenced for drug trafficking after police found drugs and cash in his backpack in June 2013.

Chris McDonough, for O’Hare, told the court at the time while it was agreed his client had recent relevant convictions, one had a strange background.

“It was not a straightforward case of trafficking in a controlled drug but rather bizarre circumstances where Mr O’Hare had stolen a car, found out who it belonged to and returned their car, being informed that it was full of drugs,” he said.

The court heard Mr O’Hare was the main carer for his young son before being taken into custody.

On Tuesday, O’Hare was remanded in custody and his charges were adjourned until April for sentencing submissions.
