Remembered as an adored brother, son and friend, Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig’s family have broken their silence after he was killed in the line of duty.

The family of a police officer killed in the line of duty during a shootout near Bordertown has spoken for the first time since his death, paying tribute to the “loving and dedicated” son and brother.

Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig was fatally shot in an incident at Senior, in the state’s South-East, on November 16.

In a tribute shared in The Advertiser, Sgt Doig’s family — including his mother Faye, stepfather Rob and brothers Brett and Greg — remembered him as a dedicated and courageous career policeman.

“Tragically taken from us serving and protecting his community,” they said.

“Jason was a loving and dedicated man who was committed to his family, friends, colleagues and the community he served.”

Last Monday, blue lights shone across major Adelaide landmarks in honour of Sgt Doig while hundreds of heartbroken community members and some of SA’s top police officers packed Lucindale’s main street to pay tribute.

A career policeman, Sgt Doig — known to friends and locals as ‘Doigy’ — joined the force in 1989 and had spent the past 15 years serving the Lucindale community as the town’s officer.

Acting Commissioner Linda Williams fought back tears as she thanked South Australians for their support in paying tribute to Sgt Doig.

Acting officer-in-charge of the Naracoorte police station Sergeant Simon Haebich remembered Sgt Doig as a close friend and colleague and a police officer dedicated to his community.

Remembering his mate’s passion, Ducati motorcycles, Sgt Haebich said Sgt Doig “loved his toys”.

Naracoorte and Lucindale Council Mayor Patrick Ross, who is also the area’s CFS group officer, said Sgt Doig was a stalwart of the region who regularly sacrificed his personal life to make sure his community was safe.

Mr Ross said Sgt Doig “lived and breathed” his work and would regularly give up his Friday nights to patrol the pub in the hopes of keeping locals safe on the roads.

Sgt Doig’s family accepted the state government’s offer of a police funeral to honour his life and service to the community, with a service to be conducted at the Adelaide Convention Centre on December 4.

Sgt Doig, together with Bordertown police officers Constable Rebekah Cass and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, were called to a home on Senior Rd, near Bordertown, about 11.20pm on Thursday November 16, after reports a man had shot a dog.

They were allegedly confronted by Jaydn Stimson, 26, when they arrived at the property.

Sgt Doig was shot and killed, while Sgt Hutchinson was also shot.

Mr Stimson suffered a life-threatening injury during the alleged incident, with Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson rendering first aid until more emergency crews arrived.

The alleged shooter appeared in court from his hospital bed in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday January 20 charged with murder and attempted murder.

Sgt Doig was the first officer to lose his life at the hands of a firearm in SA since 1985.
