As the sun set, the blue hue from Parliament House to Adelaide Oval and bathing SAPOL headquarters represented the thin blue line sworn officers accept as part of honour and risks in their job to keep SA safe.

Brevet Sergeant Doig’s family has accepted the state government’s offer of a Police funeral to honour his life and service to the community.

Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig was fatally shot in an incident at Senior, near Bordertown last Thursday, November 17.

Brevet Sergeant Doig, a well-known member of the South-East community and career policeman from Lucindale, together with Bordertown police officers Constable Rebekah Cass and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, were called to a home on Senior Rd, near Bordertown, about 11.20pm on Thursday after reports a man had shot a dog.

They were allegedly confronted by Jaydn Stimson, 26, when they arrived at the property.

Sergeant Doig was shot and killed, while Sergeant Hutchinson was also shot.

Mr Stimson suffered a life-threatening injury during the alleged incident, with Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson rendering first aid until more emergency crews arrived.

The alleged shooter appeared in court from his hospital bed in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday afternoon charged with murder and attempted murder.

He made no response other than to say “yeah” to acknowledge he could hear the court proceedings.

The state government confirmed SA Police, together with the Department of Premier and Cabinet Protocol Unit, would assist the family of Brevet Sergeant Doig to plan the funeral.

Premier Peter Malinauskas told ABC Adelaide breakfast radio on Monday morning the loss of Sergeant Doig was “an absolutely outrageous act of violence that offends us all”.

“I was on the phone to his family over the weekend, they have accepted the offer of a state supported police memorial service,” he said.

“There will be details about how the public might want to show their support for that family in due course.”

Acting Police Commissioner Linda Williams also took to ABC radio to pay tribute to the fellow officers Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson.

“The death of Brevet Sargent Jason Doig was an absolute tragedy for the whole of SAPOL and the broader community,” she said.

“What those three members faced and obviously cost Jason his life was unimaginable.

“(Sergeant) Hutchinson was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre, fortunately for him his injuries were not life threatening.

“Michael physically is doing well and has a huge amount of support from his wife Deb and daughters.”

Ms Williams described Constable Cass as “extremely heroic”.

SA Police said Lucindale police station would remain closed “until further notice”.

“Naracoorte Police Station and Bordertown Police Station remain open,” police said.

South Australia Police will ensure that the Lucindale area is being adequately policed and all requests for police attendance will be responded to.

“Please call 131 444 for police assistance or triple-0 (triple-0) in an emergency.

“ SAPOL would like to thank the local community for their continued support and patience during this time.”

“As a sign of respect for the tragic loss of Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, tonight buildings and landmarks across Adelaide will light up blue,” a state government spokesperon said.

“Blue lights will shine on buildings across Adelaide including SAPOL Headquarters, Adelaide Oval, Parliament House, Adelaide Town Hall, Adelaide Railway Station and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre”

Last week, Mr Doig’s family released a statement in the wake of his death through an SA Police spokesperson.

“The family of Jason Doig wish to thank the public for their support and condolences at this tragic time,” they said.

The man alleged to have shot and killed the beloved South Australian community police officer remains in the intensive care unit in Adelaide.

Mr Stimson suffered life threatening injuries and was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital where he has remained under police guard.

Mr Stimson is yet to be charged over the incident.
