The man accused of shooting police officers at Senior in the state’s South-East has been officially charged with murder and attempted murder.
Alleged shooter Jaydn Stimson, 26, appeared in court from his hospital bed in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday afternoon.
Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig was killed in the line of duty and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson injured during the shootout, which ended with Mr Stimson suffering life-threatening injuries and being rushed to the RAH late last Thursday evening at his property near the SA-Victorian border.
Constable Rebekah Cass rushed to provide first aid to Brevet Sergeant Hutchinson and Mr Stimson.
Mr Stimson made no application for bail when he appeared via speakerphone from hospital, where he is under heavy guard.
He made no response other than to say “yeah” to acknowledge he could hear the court proceedings.
A police prosecutor asked the court for a 20-week adjournment.
“The officers involved haven’t yet returned to work and their statements are the basis, along with body-worn video, required for charge determination.”
On that basis, he asked Mr Stimson’s matter be returned to court in early April.
Mr Stimson’s lawyer, Andrew Graham, did not oppose the adjournment.
All vision from police body-worn cameras have been suppressed.
It comes after news the family of Mr Doig had accepted the state government’s offer of a police funeral to honour his life and service to the South Australian community.
Brevet Sergeant Doig was a well-known member of the South-East community and career policeman from Lucindale.
With Bordertown police officers Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson, were called to a home on Senior Rd, near Bordertown, about 11.20pm on Thursday after reports a man had shot a dog.
They were allegedly confronted by Mr Stimson, when they arrived at the property.
Mr Stimson was also shot by police and sustained serious life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene and has since been flown to Adelaide, where he remains under police guard.
Premier Peter Malinauskas told ABC Adelaide breakfast radio on Monday morning the loss of Sergeant Doig was “an absolutely outrageous act of violence that offends us all”.
“I was on the phone to his family over the weekend, they have accepted the offer of a state supported police memorial service,” he said.
“There will be details about how the public might want to show their support for that family in due course.”
Acting Police Commissioner Linda Williams also took to ABC radio to pay tribute to the fellow officers Constable Cass and Sergeant Hutchinson.
“The death of Brevet Sargent Jason Doig was an absolute tragedy for the whole of SAPOL and the broader community,” she said.
“What those three members faced and obviously cost Jason his life was unimaginable.”
