The nicest man ever, a career country cop and an obsessive Ducati enthusiast.
That is how slain police officer Jason Doig has been remembered during an emotional memorial in the state’s south east.
Hundreds of heartbroken community members and some of South Australia’s top police officers packed Lucindale’s main street to pay tribute to Brevet Sergeant Doig.
Acting Commissioner Linda Williams fought back tears as she thanked South Australians for their support in paying tribute to Sgt Doig.
“It’s clear that Jason was a part of many families,” she said.
“Today we’re celebrating and honouring the life of one of our own who had his life taken, wrongly taken, trying to protect us all.
“On behalf of SAPOL, thank you for showing your respect and thank you for coming here today and we would just like to say thank you for the love that we have felt more recently.”
After the service, Acting Commissioner Williams said the large turnout showed Sgt Doig’s value to the Lucindale community.
“This overwhelms people but it gives people a sense of comfort that what they do in the community really means a lot to the community,” she said.
“It shows to the police officers and it certainly shows to me and our leadership team that we have the right people in the right communities doing the right thing because you wouldn’t get this otherwise if people did not feel that there was respect and honour for the police officer, and particularly Jason.
“You can tell he was a much-respected man in his community.”
Acting officer-in-charge of the Naracoorte police station Sergeant Simon Haebich remembered Sgt Doig as a close friend and colleague and a police officer dedicated to his community.
Remembering his mate’s passion Ducati motorcycles, Sgt Haebich said Sgt Doig “loved his toys”.
“Jason was a good man who paid the ultimate sacrifice keeping the community safe,” he said.
“He took his duty seriously and always performed to a high standard.
“He lived for his friends and his family.
“One thing is for certain, if you’d met Jason, you’d certainly not forget him in a hurry and I hope that some day, people say the same thing about me.”
