A police officer has died after a shooting incident in the state’s South-East on Thursday night, leaving a second officer and the suspect in hospital.
Police were called to a home on Senior Rd, near Bordertown, at about 11.20pm.
The Advertiser understands they were responding to reports that an armed man, aged 26, had shot a dog. The man’s father raised concerns, leading to police attending the property.
When police arrived, they were confronted by the suspect who allegedly opened fire.
Police Commissioner Grant Stevens this morning said the officer shot dead was Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, 53, who was based at Lucindale police station.
Constable Rebekah Cass, 31, and Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, 59, both from Bordertown Police Station, were also involved in the incident. Sgt Hutchinson suffered non-life threatening gunshot injuries and was rushed to Adelaide for treatement.
Sgt Doig’s colleagues and paramedics attempted to save his life but tragically he died at the scene.

Mr Stevens said it was “a devastating loss, and our condolences are with the officer’s family, friends and colleagues during this extremely difficult time”.
“No one goes to work expecting to not to return home and this is a very sad day for South Australia Police,” he said.
The last SA Police officer killed on duty was Senior Constable Bogdan (Bob) Sobczak, a motorcycle officer who died in a road crash in 2002.
Police said the suspect was also shot by police and sustained serious life-threatening injuries.
He was also flown to Adelaide after being treated at the scene, but remains under police guard.
Major Crime Detectives, Forensic Response Section and Internal Investigation Section will be attending the scene to investigate the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
Meanwhile, Premier Peter Malinauskas said he had been briefed by Mr Stevens on the overnight incident and addressed the issue at a press conference.
ECHOES OF CRYSTAL BROOK ATTACK
In May, two police officers were stabbed and an offender shot dead at Crystal Brook in another violent attack that stemmed from concerns about a dog.
Sean Ferris, 52, launched a frenzied stabbing that seriously wounded Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd and also left Brevet Sergeant Jordan Allely in hospital.
They had visited Ferris’s property following complaints about aggressive behaviour by his dog, a husky. The officers shot Ferris dead as he stabbed them with a knife.
