A new servo and three fast food restaurants have been proposed for a revitalised Strathpine

McDonald’s has zeroed in on a suburb north of Brisbane that is attracting new lots of investment – and it’s not the only fast food giant who has the area in its sights.

A REVITALISED suburb north of Brisbane is set for even more investment after applications have been lodged for three new fast food restaurants and a service station.

New investment into Strathpine has continued following approval of the $75m “landmark” office complex on Learmonth St and the proposed redevelopment of the Strathpine Centre.

Moreton Bay Council recently received two more applications for new developments in the suburb, one of those being for a freestanding McDonald’s near the community centre.

The other, while not confirmed, is rumoured to include a Taco Bell, as the design for one of the buildings is aesthetically similar to the design of the North Lakes Taco Bell building.

Though the planning report for the development stated the tenants were not known at this stage.

Collins Foods, which manages Taco Bell in Australia, said the company was “constantly on the lookout for fantastic sites that would make a perfect home for Taco Bell restaurants”.

“There are a number of potential sites that they are reviewing and the company looks forward to announcing them in due course,” he said.

The proposed McDonald’s restaurant is at 207-211 Gympie Rd, adjacent to the Strathpine Community Centre, on the site currently occupied by Total Eden.

Newcombe Super Company Pty Ltd is the registered owner of the site, the director of which, Alan Newcombe, has consented to the development by McDonald’s Australia.

The proposal is for a 420 sqm restaurant, a drive-through lane, 42 parking spaces, a Playland and an internal McCafe.

Vehicle access would be from Mecklam St though it was suggested that traffic lights would be required at the intersection with Gympie Rd and Mecklam St.

The second application was to develop 380 Gympie Rd into two fast food restaurants and a service station.

Lodged by PeakUrban on behalf of ICP Developments, the site runs along Stanley St East between Gympie Rd and Railway Ave, with access points on all three streets.

It was occupied by a retail complex containing several businesses including Remax Real Estate.

If approved, a service station would be situated on the corner of Gympie Rd and Stanley St East with small food outlet next door, with 10 parking spaces for the two businesses.

The western end of the development would contain a larger food outlet with a drive-through lane and nice parking spaces, making 19 in total across the whole site.

This is compared with the 42 proposed at the proposed McDonald’s.

The council’s planning scheme currently requires the number of parking spaces to equate with the floor area of a development.

The proposed 19 parking spaces would be permitted under the planning scheme, though McDonald’s in its planning report stated “It is unreasonable to consider 8-9 carparking spaces as an appropriate amount of parking for a food and drink outlet.”

Both applications are being considered by the council.
