AN OVERHAUL of BCC Cinemas has been confirmed as part of a proposed major refurbishment of the Strathpine Centre.

The centre’s owner, investment company Swordfish Australian Sub TC, has lodged an application with Moreton Bay Regional Council to create a modern entertainment and leisure precinct.

The cinema, which has been criticised for having uncomfortable seats and being “smelly”, “damp” and “mouldy”, would also get some love as part of the project.

Though there were no plans as yet to bring a Kmart store to the shopping centre, much to the disapointment of some residents who had been calling for one on social media.

News of the proposed redevelopment spread like wildfire on social media with many people delighted that Strathpine was getting some more investment.

Many, like Indigo Rivers, made a wishlist of stores they would like to have at the centre.

“I wish for Kmart, Valley Girl, Alley, and a cinema upgrade,” she said.

Scotty Boyd said, “A sports bar in the upgraded entertainment area similar to Sporting globe at Chermside would be great.”

Ann Gerhardt was dreaming big, asking for a Myers or David Jones.

“Strathpine Centre is being redeveloped in response to community feedback for an improved centre, to provide benefits to the community, and to respond to population growth,” a Strathpine Centre spokesman said.

“Our research shows shoppers want this.

“We are looking to provide a great range of retailers, an upgraded cinema and more cafes and restaurants.

“This is also about improving the outside of the centre, making it easier for pedestrians to move through and around the building.”

If approved by Moreton Bay Regional Council, the project will also include a licensed restaurant and child care centre, and will be done over three stages.

The company said it was in discussion with several businesses to lease space in the new area, many of which had an existing relationship with the centre.

“There will be minimal changes made to the existing tenancy mix,” the spokesman said.

“The redevelopment will secure the long-term future of the centre and allow it to better service the community.

“It will improve the centre’s street presence and offer a combination of leisure, dining and shopping options to cater to our customer base.”

The planning report states the company’s multi-million investment in the centre is a result of a recent revitalisation of Strathpine and surrounding suburbs.
