A woman golfer has been viciously attacked by a kangaroo on a Gold Coast golf course.
The 69-year-old was playing at Arundel Hills golf course about 9.10am when she was attacked from behind by the large roo.
She suffered multiple lacerations to her face, including a cut to her jaw that may require stitches, and legs and soft tissue injuries to her head.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Pindara Private Hospital in a stable condition.
Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Joel McEwan said the victim had “significant lacerations” to her face, arms and legs after the kangaroo kicked her.
“She’s fallen to the ground at that first kick and when she’s been on the ground, she’s been stomped a number of times by the kangaroo,” he said.
Mr McEwan said the woman had reportedly been attacked “without warning” after the kangaroo came from the side of the fairway.
“The patient was quite upset at the scene — obviously it’s a shock being attacked by quite a large kangaroo,” he said.
Mr McEwan said kangaroo attacks were not uncommon, “especially on the golf courses where they get quite a lot of kangaroos”.
He said the kangaroo that attacked the woman sounded like it was a large adult.
“Obviously when they stand up with their tail in support, they can stand the size of an average (human) male,” he said.
Mr McEwan said the woman’s worst injury was a deep laceration to her jaw which might require stitches.
Arundel Hills, near Southport, is well-known for large mobs of kangaroos which interact with golfers on the picturesque course and often interrupt play.
Late last year, footage of golf club member Wendy Powick being mobbed by a group of roos as she prepared to tee off went viral.
Mrs Powick’s husband, Scott, had to use a golf wedge to defend himself after being attacked by a large roo at Arundel Hills in March.
