Footage of a Gold Coast golfer being mobbed by kangaroos is being acclaimed as the most viral video of 2021, with a staggering 2.9 billion views worldwide.
Wendy Powick was playing her local course Arundel Hills Country Club in October when a large group of ‘roos bounded up the fairway and sat right in front of her, stopping her from teeing off.
“They’ve come to watch me tee off,” an astonished Mrs Powick says in the video, captured by her husband and playing partner Scott.
“What’s going on?”
More ’roos hopped in and happily played hazard in the middle of the fairway before finally hightailing it to let the Powicks resume their game.
The couple said the video had gone ‘absolutely viral’ after they posted it on social media.
“It’s gone ballistic, we’ve outdone the Kardashians,” Mr Powick said.
“The video has had 2.9 billion registered views, which is more than any other in 2021.
“It’s just been insane.”
The Powicks said the video had been picked up by news outlets in almost 170 countries and had received almost 400 million views alone through LADbible after they licensed it to the British digital publisher.
Major sports sites including ESPN, GOLF TV and Golf Digest were among those clamouring for the video, Mr Powick said.
“Tiger Woods videos only really appeal to golfers but a video of a decent sort like Wendy playing golf with kangaroos goes nuts online,” he said.
“It’s gone bonkers in Asia, Europe, the US and Middle East. They’re calling Wendy the ‘Kangaroo Girl’.”
Mrs Powick, who only took up golf 12 months ago, is already attracting the attention of sponsors and has fans at her local course lining up for selfies with their new celebrity member.
She said while she was accustomed to seeing kangaroos at Arundel Hills, she had never seen them mob like they did that day.
“It was so amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.
“There were a couple of really big bucks among them and while I wasn’t ever threatened, I did have my 3 iron ready just in case they got aggro.”
