Lauren Jean Green in court after failing to produce Covid-19 venue check-in at Prince of Wales Proserpine

Boxing Day drinks at a North Queensland pub did not end well for a mother-of-two who could not show staff a completed Covid-19 check-in.

A North Queensland woman who snuck past a pub’s Covid check-in signs for Boxing Day drinks with mates then lashed out violently when asked to leave has faced court on multiple charges.

Mother-of-two Lauren Jean Green, 38, entered Proserpine’s Prince of Wales Hotel about 4pm on December 26, 2021, and did not complete the venue’s mandatory Covid-19 check-in requirements, despite being asked to do so.

Proserpine Magistrates Court heard Green bypassed staff at the bar to head to the beer garden and have friends buy drinks for her.

The court heard when staff cottoned on and asked her to leave, she yelled “You’re all f*cking racist” while smashing dinner plates on the ground.

She had to be physically removed from the venue, and remained in the carpark refusing to leave until police arrived to arrest her.

Placed in a segregation cell at the Cannonvale watch-house because of her level of intoxication, Green requested a cup of tea to help her sober up, then threw the drink at a CCTV camera on the wall.

She pleaded guilty to committing public nuisance in a licensed premises and wilful damage of police property.

Defence lawyer Rosemary Varley told the court her client had drunk whisky and wine at home before attending the pub that afternoon and had a very limited recollection of the offences.

Ms Varley said the damage to the watch-house cell was minimal as the tea had been served in a plastic cup.

Of her client’s outburst at the pub, Ms Varley explained Green identified as Indigenous and had been wearing a ‘Deadly Choices’ t-shirt with Indigenous designs printed on it and was in the company of an Indigenous friend at the time.

Green told the court pub patrons had called her and her friend “black dogs”.

The court heard Green was a full-time carer for her two children, both of whom had special needs.

As well as the Boxing Day offences, she pleaded guilty to fare evasion after failing to pay for a $59.60 taxi ride from Cannonvale to Proserpine on November 14.

Magistrate James Morton noted Green had a “terrible” criminal history including “a lot of drugs back in the day” and other offences including assault and unlawful wounding.

He acknowledged the need to “let your hair down” but said this was “not the way to go about it” and banned Green from the Prince of Wales Hotel for 12 months.

“You made a spectacle of yourself,” he said. “You make things worse for yourself.”

Mr Morton imposed $650 in fines and a $59.60 restitution order for the unpaid taxi fare.

Convictions were recorded.
