A beloved Hamilton Island restaurant is closing its doors as the island’s culinary offerings “evolve”.

Mariners Seafood Restaurant will close on May 18 with no word yet on what will take its place on Front St.

A Hamilton Island spokesperson said the restaurant was a long-time favourite and a much loved part of the island’s dining scene.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has enjoyed a meal at Mariners, and to the dedicated team behind it for their passion, creativity, and commitment to delivering the warm Australian hospitality for which Hamilton Island is renowned,” they said.

“We’re proud of Mariners’ legacy — and excited about what’s to come.”

Island goers have shared their disappointment at the news of the closure on Facebook, with many sharing memories of first visits and special occasions spent at the iconic venue.

“Favourite food and the best cocktails,” said one commenter.

“End of an era for so many people,” said another.

The restaurant prided itself as Hamilton Island’s premier seafood dining experience, offering quality Australian seafood in an elegant setting with views over the marina.

Curated two-course menus and signature seafood platters for two were available at the restaurant for guests over the age of 14, providing a refined yet relaxed atmosphere.

One Facebook commenter said they were disappointed they never got to take their daughter who was not yet old enough to dine at the restaurant.

The location had previously housed Spinnakers Restaurant and Steakhouse Restaurant and Grill through the 1990s and 2000s before Mariners took over the location.

The news comes just weeks after the opening of the island’s newest hotel The Sundays and their signature restaurant Catseye Pool Club.

The new restaurant and bar by acclaimed Australian culinary duo Josh and Julie Niland is said to celebrate seasonal Australian produce with a relaxed, share style approach to island dining.
