Community rallies for Collinsville boy fighting rare cancer

How buying a pizza today will help the little battler who has already undergone a lengthy surgery and will soon face chemotherapy.

A “gentle” and “inquisitive” Collinsville boy has been diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer so the community is stepping up to support his family with medical costs.

Last month Adam Ford, who lives at Havilah Station in Collinsville, was diagnosed with undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver and was immediately transferred by air from Mackay Base Hospital to Queensland’s Children’s hospital.

To help support Adam’s family, Domino’s Bowen is hosting a ‘doughraiser’ on Wednesday, March 10, and is donating $2 from every pizza sold.

Franchisee Rychelle Piatek and the team at Domino’s Bowen are aiming to raise more than $1000 to help support Adam and the Ford family with medical costs associated with his cancer treatment, including any travel expenses to and from Brisbane.

Ms Piatek said Adam had undergone a 10-hour operation to remove his tumour, which also involved the removal of a portion of his liver and bowel.

“Due to the nature of his cancer, as soon as he was strong enough to recover from the long operation, Adam had to soon commence chemotherapy,” she said.

“I can’t imagine how difficult the past month must have been for the Ford family … so I reached out to offer my support. I knew our team had to help Adam on his fight.

“I want the Ford family to know that they are not alone during this difficult time.

“I, like many others in Collinsville and Bowen community, are here to help.

“Adam is an inquisitive, gentle-natured country kid who has spent the past two years calling Havilah Station in Collinsville home.”

Ms Piatek said it was important to give back to others in the community.

“We hope to raise more than $1000 for Adam and the Ford family to help cover the costs of ongoing chemotherapy and radiation in Brisbane for the next 12 months, including any additional travel expenses or costs incurred for the family during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.

“As a small-business owner, I am passionate about giving back to the local communities in which we operate, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do so at this time.

“We encourage all of our customers to come down to Domino’s Bowen this Wednesday for a slice of their favourite pizza to help us raise funds to support Adam and the Ford family.”

The doughraiser for the Ford family will be held on Wednesday, March 10, from 11am to 10pm with $2 from every pizza sold donated directly to the family.

Domino’s Bowen is located at 41 Herbert St, Bowen.
