Wet fortnight incoming with triple the average rainfall in some areas

Almost the entire state can expect a drenching over the next two weeks, with triple the average rainfall totals in some areas. SEE WEEKEND FORECAST

Severe weather warnings across Australia

Rain bombs are set to hammer Queensland over the next fortnight according to the latest climate outlook.

The Bureau of Meteorology released its latest rainfall predictions that see the next fortnight to October 30 have more than an 80 per cent chance of rain across almost the entire state.

During that fortnight, the northern parts of the state will see at least three times the average chance of unusually high rainfall.

The pattern of above median rainfall for Queensland will be strongest in November, with early predictions expecting to see it drop off slightly in December.

Going forward, widespread rainfall is expected into next week, according to BOM metrologist Helen Reid.

“Looking at the next system, it’s not going to be clear for a few days next week,” she said.

A trough is set to move through Western Queensland before reaching South East Queensland late on Friday, but Ms Reid said it shouldn’t bring too much rain.

“Sunday then we’ll have some showers hanging around and Monday they’ll still be lingering with the potential for a couple of thunderstorms,” she said.

Meanwhile, temperatures in the south east will remain below average for a while longer, according to Ms Reid with Brisbane seeing minimums of 16C and 17C from tomorrow through to next week.

WEEKEND FORECAST

BOM meteorologist Steve Hadley said South East Queensland can expect relatively clear weekend weather, with the trough over South West Queensland forecast to fizzle out before moving across the East coast.

“We could potentially see a shower or two throughout Friday in South East Queensland ahead of the trough,” he said.

“Saturday is expected to be clear over SEQ with the possibility of a shower going North towards the Sunshine Coast, with 1mm to 5mm of rain at most.

“There’s a slight chance of rain over Brisbane on Sunday, a shower or two over the Sunshine Coast and the possibility of a shower over the Gold Coast.”

Regional areas, however, may cop some weekend wet weather according to the bureau.

“Rockhampton and inland to Longreach can expect showers and storms on Saturday, and Goondiwindi to Roma can expect isolated thunderstorms with 10mm to 20mm of rain,” Mr Hadley said.
