A cool “shock” is set to hit South East Queensland after storms swept through the region overnight, bringing in heavy rain to some centres.

Storms that hit the Southern Downs late on Wednesday tracked east during the night before hitting Brisbane about 3.30am.

Cons Plain, near Warwick, was smashed with 141mm of rain between 12-3am, while Stanthorpe received 58mm between 9pm-12am.

The weather bureau’s Felim Hanniffy said Ipswich received falls of about 30mm overnight, with nearby Tallegalla recording 27mm within the three hours until 6am, while Bribie Island caught 26mm and Mt Crosby received 24mm in the same period.

“It mostly fell in a short duration. A lot of people probably had a restless sleep around the region this morning, but the heaviest rainfall was around the west and the Granite Belt,” Mr Hanniffy said.

Showers continued in Brisbane on Thursday morning, but Mr Hanniffy said the risk of any more storm activity in the state’s capital was low as the weather system moved north.

“For Brisbane the worst of the rain has passed,” he said.

He said a cooler westerly change would move through the South East midafternoon.

“The rain today is already fragmented and breaking up over the South East,” he said.

“It’ll be mostly cooler tonight. With that cool change there will be a slight risk of rain and storm activity but its focal point will be Wide Bay and Capricornia (areas).”

Overnight temperatures could drop as low as 10C in the Southern Downs area, while Brisbane is likely to drop to 17C.

“The cooler start from tomorrow will give a real taste of an autumnal morning,” Mr Hannifey said.

“It’ll be a shock to the system from tomorrow as we’ve been used to quite hot and humid conditions.”

The forecaster said that after a clear and sunny Friday and partly cloudy Saturday, showers will pick up again on Sunday.

“It’ll pick up again with moisture returning, not as humid but showers picking up again in the latter part of the weekend and early next week,” he said.
