Storms are bringing heavy rain to parts of the state this afternoon, with the southeast hit just ahead of the AFLW grand final kick-off.

The Bureau of Meteorology had a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of central Queensland and the state’s northwest from the late morning, but rain didn’t hit the south until the early afternoon.

The first thunder in the Brisbane region was heard just before 1.30pm, ahead of the 1.40pm kick-off for the AFLW grand final clash between Brisbane and Melbourne at the Lions’ new base in Springfield. Heavy rain hit about 20 minutes later.

Widespread rain is forecast for large parts of Queensland this week with La Nina’s impacts expected to last throughout December.

Rainfall will begin to pick up from Monday, with the majority of the southeast to experience their wettest days on Wednesday and Thursday.

The BoM’s latest severe thunderstorm warning, for heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hailstones, was issued at 12.56pm and was in place for people in parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego forecast districts.
