Brisbane shivers awake to one of its coldest days on record

If you reached for that extra blanket this morning, you’re not alone, as Brisbane and much of southeast Queensland have shivered awake to one of the coldest mornings on record.

Snow falls in southern Queensland

If you reached for that extra blanket this morning, you’re not alone, as Brisbane has shivered awake to one of the coldest mornings on record.

BOM Meteorologist Rosa Hoff on Wednesday said Brisbane temperatures were expected to plummet to as low as 5C Thursday morning as the cold snap continues, and experts predicted the coldest day in more than two years in Warwick.

And, it played out that way, with Amberley reaching -0.1 degrees with an apparent temperature of -3.3 degrees by 6am, with the cold really biting across most of the state’s southeast.

Bureau Meteorologist Livio Regano said it was the coldest night of the year at Brisbane Airport. By 4.40am it was 5.8C but felt like 1.8C.

“The cold weather is coming because we had a southwest wind coming off the dry land,” he said.

“But what has made it particularly cold is the wind has dropped so the cold air being carried up is starting to sit lower on the surface.”

Roma was officially -3.4C but felt like -7.2C at 6am, with Applethorpe sitting at -3.7 but feeling like -6.3.

Chinchilla was sitting at -0.9 at 6am but felt like -3.4, and Warwick was -1.8 but felt like -5.4 degrees at 6am.

Dalby was feeling super cold at -6.6 but the official temperature a slightly warmer -2.9 degrees.

Toowoomba was 0.6 degrees at 6am but felt like minus 1.3, while just before 6am, Biloela had a temperature of -1.6 but an apparent temperature of 5.2 degrees.

In Emerald it was 5.1 degrees just before 6am but felt like less than 2. Charleville was 6.6 degrees with an apparent temperature of 2.5.

On the Sunshine Coast it was warmer with 6.5 degrees at the Sunshine Coast Airport but the apparent temperature was 1.9.

Tewantin was sitting at 6.1 with an apparent temperature of 3.7.

The Gold Coast was much warmer with 9.6 at the Gold Coast Seaway while Coolangatta was 11.1 degrees.

Further north, Bundaberg was warm with 5.8 degrees and an apparent temperature of 2.4 while Gympie was 0.9 with an apparent temperature of almost 1 degree below 0.

Hervey Bay was sitting on 2.6 but feeling like -0.4 degrees.

Gladstone was warmer on 8.1 but it felt like 3.3 degrees and Rockhampton was down to 4 degrees with an apparent temperature of 1.9.

The cold snap comes following blink-and-you’ll-miss-it snowfall that fell in parts of Queensland on Wednesday.

Snowflakes were captured on video falling among some sleet and rain near the Eukey Town Hall just south of Stanthorpe.

“We’re likely to see widespread frost through the southern, eastern and central parts of Queensland,” Ms Hoff said.

Mr Regano said the cold snap won’t last long, with a sudden change to cause minimums to rise as early as tomorrow.
