A rural Southern Downs community will see a major revamp to its essential services as construction on a multipurpose hub begins.

Construction on the Allora Precinct Project is now under way to bring the town library and other key services together in a dedicated space to improve accessibility and create a central hub for the community.

Major components of the redevelopment will include relocating the library, upgrading the septic, heating and lighting systems, adding new meeting rooms and creating a new after-hours back entry.

The library will see a new home next door to the multipurpose space of the Allora Senior Citizen’s Centre and is expected to take place over a two-week period in July.

A council spokesperson said library services will be temporarily interrupted during this period, with council to continue to provide the community with updates.

“The library’s online services will continue to operate as usual. Warwick pick-up reservation services will remain available and a customer service representative can always be contacted on 1300 697 372 during the short periods when the library is temporarily closed,” the spokesperson said.

Construction on the project will see the Allora Senior Citizens Centre temporarily close, with residents encouraged to use the Community Hall during this period.

Southern Downs councillor Carla Pidgeon said the project was a significant step forward for Allora and will better service the community by providing modern amenities while preserving the town’s rich heritage.

“The new Allora Precinct represents an exciting new era for the town of Allora, bringing together our community in a central and dedicated space that celebrates our history while looking forward to the future,” Ms Pidgeon said.

“It also shows locals that council is here to work with the community and that we recognise that spaces like this are essential for people to come together, access services and strengthen connections.

“I’m really looking forward to the precinct taking shape and seeing what it means to Allora’s future.”

Southern Downs Regional Council endorsed the project following a community survey in December 2023, which was undertaken to understand community utilisation of council assets in Allora.

Allora’s Community Hall saw a $400,000 facelift in August last year, after major stability and structural issues with the building saw the upgrade sent to the top of the priority list.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the project aims to have positive long-term social and economic benefits for the community.

“Breaking ground on the Allora Precinct Project reflects council’s commitment to supporting our regional towns and creating spaces where people can connect, thrive and celebrate their community,” Ms Hamilton said.

“This redevelopment represents a major investment in the Allora community and I would like to thank the Queensland government’s Works for Queensland funding for this project on behalf of the local community.”
