Snow is set to transform Warwick into a glittering winter wonderland this week, as predictions of the coldest June day in the past decade brings frosty conditions to the Rose City.

Weatherzone meteorologist Joel Pippard said a bitter cold front would begin moving across the region at about midnight Wednesday, kickstarting Warwick’s chances of snow.

“It looks like that first front will bring the slight chance of a thunderstorm, but mainly it’s just going to be rain,” Mr Pippard said.

“We’re expecting about 10mm – 20mm with that, so it’s going to be decent, soaking rain.

“It’s from there the cold conditions will really settle in. Wednesday’s looking at a top of 12C, and Thursday about 10C – the average for this time of year is 18C, so it’s going to be several degrees colder.”

He said it would be a combination of this cold front with just the right amount of moisture in the air that would make snow a “decent possibility” for the Rose City early Thursday morning.

“Stanthorpe’s a bit more likely to get snow, but Warwick is definitely within reason,” Mr Pippard said.

“It probably won’t last on the ground for too long if it does fall, but there might be a little dusting of 1cm or 2cm – we aren’t expecting a whole heap.

“It’s still a little bit uncertain, but the possibility is definitely there.”

Rose City residents will continue to shiver through the end of the week and into the weekend, with an additional wind chill dropping temperatures by another several degrees.

“Thursday is going to feel really cold, it might feel about 5C all day,” Mr Pippard said.

“If there’s any time of year it’s going to happen, it’s going to be winter, but 10C hasn’t happened (in June) since 2011 so it could be the coldest June day in 10 years.”

Snow last reached the Warwick and Granite Belt areas in 2019, with “significant amounts of sleet” reported.
