Motel and accommodation providers across the Granite Belt are posting “No Vacancy” signs as snow-chasers prepare to descend on the region to witness a Queensland winter wonderland.
BOM today upgraded its earlier forecast for sleet to a chance of snow, with temperatures plummeting on the Granite Belt.
Applethorpe was a chilly -0.6C on Monday morning, but is expected to get even colder later in the week.
Meteorologist Matt Marshall said there was a chance of snowfall from Wednesday afternoon and into that night.
Granite Belt Motel owner Michael Jensen said with snow predicted for Wednesday, his motel was fully booked for that day and most of the rest of the week.
“The cold weather snap in Stanthorpe normally makes it harder to find accommodation, but it‘s even busier with the prediction of snow on its way,” he said.
“This is great for the region, as it’s so good to see the beautiful area being visited by so many tourists from out of town.”
Mr Marshall said the Granite Belt could expect warmer temperatures for Monday and Tuesday, before a cold front arrives Wednesday.
“Wednesday morning won’t be too cool with 3C forecast, but a change during the day of south-westerly winds will bring rainfall and cold temperatures for a maximum of 11C,” he said.
“The cloud will start clearing Thursday with a morning forecast of -2C and that dry chill will continue with just 8C maximum temperature.”
